| Abstract: | A model for time-dependent unsteady heat transfer from magma flowing in a dyke is developed. The ratio of solidification T to magma T is the most important parameter. Observations of volcanic fissure eruptions and study of dykes near Ship Rock, New Mexico, show that the low T at dyke margins and the rapidly advancing solidification front predicted by the model are qualitatively correct.-M.S. |
