| Abstract: | A model of volcanic tremor is presented in which the modes of vibration of a volcanic pipe are excited by the motion of the fluid within the pipe in response to a short-term perturbation in pressure. The model shows the relative importance of the various parts constituting this composite source in the radiated elastic field at near and intermediate distances. The paper starts with the presentation of the elastic field radiated by the source, and proceeds with an analysis of the energy balance between hydraulic and elastic motions. Next, the hydraulic excitation of the source is addressed and, finally, the ground response to this excitation is analyzed in the simple case of a pipe buried in a homogeneous half space. |
