| Abstract: | Spectral differences between ‘true‘ gossans (weathered ore) and ‘false‘ gossans (limonite separate from ore) are described and correlated with phyllosilicate morphology and crystal chemistry and with limonite mineralogy from an arid climate (Saudi Arabia) and a humid palaeoclimate (Australia). A similar dichotomy is found in the true gossans from the climatically intermediate West Shasta district, and inferred to relate to a form of deposit-size zoning.-G.J.N. |
