Abstract

The Wheeler Wilderness Study Area occupies about 21 sq mi in the La Garita Mountains in Mineral County, southwestern Colorado, about 6 mi east of Creede. No mineral-resource potential was identified in the area as a result of field and laboratory investigations conducted in the adjacent La Garita Wilderness. Analytical data and indications of previous mining or prospecting are negative with respect to indications of mineral deposits. If mineral deposits exist, they would likely be associated with one of two anomalies which may be related to an intrusive at a depth of 1000 ft or more, as indicated by aeromagnetic and gravity surveys.
