Deep artesian aquifers of Sanibel and Captiva Islands, Lee County, Florida

Abstract

The principal sources of water on Sanibel and Captiva Islands, Lee County, Florida, are two deep artesian aquifers within the upper and lower parts of the Hawthorn Formation. Both aquifers are under artesian pressure and wells flow at the land surface. Water from the upper aquifer is of better quality than that from the lower aquifer and can be used in some areas without desalination. Dissolved solids concentrations in the upper aquifer average 1,540 milligrams per liter. Water levels in wells in the upper aquifer range from 8 to 15 feet above sea level; most wells flow as much as 15 gallons per minute at land surface. The lower aquifer is the source of the public supply for the islands. Dissolved solids concentrations in the lower aquifer range from 1,700 to 4,130 milligrams per liter and average 2,571 milligrams per liter. From July to November 1977, water levels in the aquifer ranged from 7 to 32 feet above sea level throughout Sanibel-Captiva Islands. In 1977 the average pumpage from public supply wells was 1.4 million gallons per day. Pumpage from the artesian aquifers during 1977 was about 690 million gallons.
