25,000 new journal article citations

The USGS Publications Warehouse has added over 25,000 citations for articles authored by USGS researchers in scientific and technical journals. This represents a significant contribution to the scholarly literature in every subject area where the USGS has researchers working. This effort spans a number of years but is not comprehensive for the entire history of the USGS. This effort compliments the current practice of capturing USGS contributions to the scholarly literature as they are published.

Journal of Research now available

The complete run of the USGS Journal of Research is now available full text. In the basic search, combine the words journal and research and volume, to narrow results. Each entry contains a complete issue of the journal.

USGS Numbered Series Search Option

A checkbox has been added to the Advanced Search area which allows the capability to easily search only within the USGS Numbered Series catalog.

RIS Export to Endnote

Exporting RIS files can be done on any search by clicking the Export to RIS link found in the upper left menu of the search screen. Endnote will now pick up the publication year of citations found in the Y1 tag. If you spot an inconsistency between our citations and what can be imported into Endnote, please contact the Pubs Warehouse Team by clicking the link at the bottom of your screen, or by emailing pubswarehouse@usgs.gov.

Historical Map Collection Now Online

The USGS National Geospatial Program has released nearly 90,000 high resolution scans of the more than 200,000 historical USGS topographic maps, some dating as far back as 1884. The entire historical collection is being loaded at a rapid pace. Check the website for continuous updates: http://nationalmap.gov/historical The Historical Topographic Map Collection includes published U.S. maps of all scales and editions, and are offered as a georeferenced digital download or as a scanned print from the USGS Store. Historical maps are available to the public at no cost in GeoPDF format or as a printed copy for $15 plus a $5 handling charge from the USGS Store. The electronic maps are georeferenced and can be used in conjunction with the new USGS digital topographic map, the US Topo. As a series, topographic maps have never been described or made available through the USGS Publications Warehouse. The USGS Publications Warehouse includes scientific and technical reports authored by USGS staff as well as thematic maps (geologic, land cover, vegetation, etc.) but not topographic maps. To find topographic maps, you can search the USGS Store at: store.usgs.gov (click on Map Locator and Downloader) or you can search the historical collection at http://nationalmap.gov/historical

DJVU files to be replaced by PDF

The U.S. Geological Survey's Publications Warehouse (pubs.usgs.gov) will complete a process to migrate all of its' on-line publications into Portable Document Format (PDF) files by September 1, 2011.

Differentiation between plates/document

In the advanced search, the filter results button will narrow a search using Publication Type, Author, Year, Journal, Collection, Report Series, Report Number. (See: FAQ titled Filter Results under Search Topics)

If too many results are generated, enter more information in the basic search or use the advanced search and fill in specific fields. Another strategy is to download the results to an output file and search for the specific pub.

The(*) can be used as a wildcard in the report number series field in the advanced search. ex. 2010-* will retrieve all 2010 reports.

If a specific item is what is needed, use the author, series, series number dropdown menus along with the specific wording to locate exact publications.

Basic Search Fields Explained

Basic search matches against pub series, series number, title, author, pub year, pub series full name, and originating office. A three character string is a necessity for a term to be considered. Use BUL instead of B for bulletins. SIR 5077 will return all years of SIRs with 5077 as the series number.

Excessive results for basic search fixed

We've also been working to resolve an issue with our Basic Search function that results in too many results due to the numerous fields the function searches. To resolve this we've modified our Basic Search field to strip off any search terms less than three characters but shorter searches, such as an author's initials, can still be done in our Advanced Search field.

Fix implemented for Timed-Out Search

We're also aware that users have encountered problems with the speed of searches and searches resulting in a blank page. We are currently investigating the reasons for the delay in search results, but if your search results in a timed-out message, try hitting the refresh icon in your browser and this should bring the results of your search to your page. Refer to the FAQ section titled Searching for tips on creating an effective search.

Wild card option for Numbered Series

Our Publications Warehouse search engine has been updated to make searching easier and more productive. We've done this by making searches more inclusive of variations with report numbers including searches no longer being case sensitive, returning results that include parentheses and hyphens, and allowing partial report number searches to include all reports with those numbers. We've also added wild card searching to our Advanced Search field so that when an asterisk is entered at the end of the report number the search results will include all reports that contain those numbers.

Case sensitivity is no longer an issue in the report number search. Searching 100-A or 100-a will retrieve the same results.

This global catalog of 1.5 billion items available through libraries is a great resource for finding a publication that is not online or available either in Publications Warehouse or the USGS store

WRIR and OFR records link to USGS Store

USGS report series OFR and WRIR now display availability if they are available for purchase through the USGS Store. Within the citation display, the words 'Available for purchase as item number:' appear. Click on the item number to connect directly with the USGS store to place an order.

The use of browser back buttons often causes the original search terms to be lost. Use the New Search link to retain your terms or click on 'try another search' if you receive the 'no publications found' message.

Significant Biology additions to PW

The Publications Warehouse now includes citations for USGS authored journal articles and other information products in addition to the more than 75,500 USGS numbered series publications. On October 1, 2009, approximately 5,000 citations for journal articles from the Biological Resources Discipline (BRD) were indexed and incorporated into the Publications Warehouse. An additional 8,000 BRD records were added in July 2010. This significant contribution from the BRD includes citations and links for books, journal articles, book chapters, conference proceedings, and a variety of other publications authored by USGS scientists.

Education Materials Collated

A special collection of USGS Facts Sheets and General Information Products that support study in the areas of earth science, biology, geography, and hydrology have been merged to create the "Education Collection" which is available on the PW home page.

Thumbnails depict actual report cover

Instead of using generic thumbnail images, the covers of internally produced USGS new publications are being captured in the form of a thumbnail image. These appear alongside the bibliographic information in each record. A retrospective project is underway to create thumbnails of products produced in series such as: the USGS Professional Pages, Water-Resources Investigations Reports, the Scientific Investigations Reports, and others.

Information products produced internally within the Survey are designated with a thumbnail image of the actual report cover or the words USGS Publication. Publications produced externally (i.e. journal and book literature) are designated with a thumbnail titled Publication of an Organization other than the U.S. Geological Survey.

Pubs Warehouse Version 2 Features

Publications Warehouse now has a new look. New Publications of the USGS and Most Popular Publications can now be viewed on the PW home page. The new version utilizes a variety of drop-down menus to make advanced searching easier than ever. The use of a "citation view" allows an individual record to be displayed in its entirety while also keeping the entire list of search results available. Exporting records for use in citation manager and spreadsheet software is an added feature.

Feeds make keeping current simple. Look for the orange "feed" icon next to the "New Publications" section on the Homepage. Click the "Subscribe to Feed" button to begin receiving daily updates listing the new publications produced by USGS.

MYPUBS Feature under Development

The Publications Warehouse is developing a new back-end interface that will support the creation of custom collections from the PW citation data. USGS staff will be able to create collections of citations by topic, organization, author, etc. The new MyPubs interface will also support additional submissions of USGS-authored research including citations and links for books, journal articles, book chapters, conference proceedings, and a variety of other publications.
